Communiqué Anja Niedringhaus

Anja Niedringhaus, Former epa Chief Photographer

Frankfurt am Main, 04 April 2014

The news that our long-time colleague and former epa chief photographer Anja Niedringhaus was shot and killed in Afghanistan today leaves us in shock.

Anja began full-time work with epa in 1990. After her baptism at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, she entered the world of conflict with the outbreak of the conflict in the Balkans. Coverage in various crisis regions followed in her career, among them Kosovo, Serbia, the aftermath of September 11, and the fall of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. In 2002 she moved on to the Associated Press.

The impact Anja made amongst her friends and colleagues with her photography and her special personality, a zest for life and passion for her job, has always been with us.

We have lost a great friend and esteemed colleague and are deeply saddened by this news. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.

She will be missed dearly.
