What is the epa news photo service?
When does a service photo become an archive photo?
A service photo becomes an archive photo eight days after its transmission in the epa service.

Can I get access to a certain category only?
You can also request access to certain galleries (e.g. Sports) or a specified number of galleries only.

How many images does the epa archive contain?
Overall the epa archive contains about three million images dating back to 1997. Every day the epa archive grows by an average of 1,100 pictures - generated by a network of more than 400 photographers worldwide.
What are the rates for image usage?
The prices for the usage of our imagery differ depending on various parameters.

Am I charged per download?

Are all epa images available in the epa webgate?
Not all epa images are available in the epa webgate. The following images are not available online:
- some images which belong to an epa collection,
- most images dating further back than 1997,
- images that have not been digitised.
If you cannot find a particular image or if you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Service Department. We can also assist you in finding images from our shareholders' archives.

How far back does the epa digital archive go?
How do I find a particular image?
A great part of our archives and services are available online through the epa webgate. Enter one or more keywords or an image number in the "Text Search" field.
When searching with multiple words you can use the following operators:
- space between words
- comma
- + (plus sign)
- "AND" between words
For using "OR" either enter a:
- # (hash-sign)
- "OR" between words
For using "AND NOT" either enter a:
- - (minus-sign) directly in front of the word
- "AND NOT" between words
Additionally, you can specify your search request by using the additional options listed below the "Text Search" field.

What do the particular search options stand for?
In order to specify your search request you can choose between these additional options:
- Horizontal or Vertical
Search images with either orientation only.
- Headshot
The focus of the image is on a person's face.
- News, Sports, Entertainment, Business
Search one or several of these most searched image categories.
- Features
Search feature packages only.
- Creative
Search images tagged as creative only.
- Date or Period
Search images taken on a specified date or in a specified period.
- Country
Search images shot in a specified country.
- City
Search images shot in a specified city.
- Photographer
Search images taken by a specified photographer.
- Category
Search images belonging to a specified category.
- Collection
Search images provided by a specified partner.
- Region
Search images taken in a specified region.
You may choose one or several options for your search.
Do I have to fill in all fields for a search?
No, you can use one search option only or any combination of search parameters.
What does "Search in Results" mean?
After having made a search and looking for something particular you can search within the results displayed if you want to narrow the results even further. Simply click on "Search in Results" and add more search parameters before clicking on "Search" again.
Can I customize the webgate display?
You can customize the epa webgate display by clicking on "Settings" located below the main navigation panel on the right.
This function allows you to change:
- the thumbnail size,
- the number of columns to be displayed,
- the number of rows to be displayed,
- the maximum number of search results,
- the display of images from images with text to images only or vice-versa,
Click on "Apply" to save your settings.
How do I change my settings?

Do the images have the same resolution as seen online?
The images are only available online in a thumbnail and preview version. Once downloaded the images are available in full resolution.

What is a lightbox?
The epa webgate allows you to collect your personal selection of images in lightboxes.
Just click "Create lightbox". A new window opens and you can enter an individual name for your lightbox. In order to finally create the lighbox simply click "Create now".
You find all available personal lightboxes in the scrollbar below the main navigation panel.

How do I retrieve the photos from my lightbox?
The epa webgate allows you to create lightboxes for your personal usage. You find all available personal lightboxes in the scrollbar below the main navigation panel.
How do I rename a lightbox?
You find all available personal lightboxes in the scrollbar below the main navigation panel. Choose the lightbox you want to modify. Click on Rename lightbox next to the scrollbar. A new window opens and you can enter an new name for your lightbox. In order to finally save the new name simply click "Rename".
What is a basket?
Images can be added to your basket if you are logged in to the epa webgate. Once you completed your search(es) you can review the images in your basket and create lightboxes. Depending on your account settings you can also directly download images from here or order the image.
What is an offer?
Offers are essentially packages of images. In order to see an offer's images, click its title.

Image Restrictions
What does "Pool" mean?
On certain occasions only a very limited number of photographers are allowed to take pictures. In these cases some photo agencies team up and determine a photographer who in this special case provides his/her images to the entire pool of agencies participating.
What does "Handout" mean?
A handout image is provided by a third party. In most cases (though not necessarily) these are governmental or promotional images.
What does "XY Out" mean?
For some images we do not hold the rights for all countries. In these cases you will find information like "Poland out" in the IPTC-field.

What does "No Sales" mean?
Images marked with "no sales" in the IPTC-field may not be sold by epa. In most cases these pictures are handouts.
If you would like to use such an image for editorial purposes we can make it available to you against a small handling fee. Under no circumstances we can license these images to you.

What does "Editorial Use Only" mean?
Images marked with "Editorial Use Only" in the IPTC-field have not been released for commercial use. These images may only be used editorially and in the direct context that they have been released.

How do I open an account?

How do I change my password?
You can change your password online. Just login to your account then click on "my webgate account" and then select "change password". To save your changes click "save".
If you forgot your password open the login function, check the "Forgot password" box then click the "login" button. A new window opens. Enter your login name and e-mail address then click on "submit".

How do I unblock my account?

Your temporary password is automatically mailed to your e-mail address. Once logged-in you can change your password again.

You can change your contact details online. Just login to your account then click on "my webgate account". To save your changes click "save".
How do I download images?

Currently the epa service distributes an average of 1,100 pictures daily - generated by a network of more than 400 photographers worldwide.

As a general form of delivery customers may choose between a push (which is available as satellite or FTP) or a pull system (which is available as FTP or web access).

Do you only provide images from Europe?
No, epa provides images from around the globe – delivered by the broad international network of its 400 photographers and its European member agencies.
All photos are edited and distributed by our editorial staffs in Frankfurt, Bangkok, Cairo, and Washington, DC, providing a daily 24 hour service.

What is a pull-service?
The epa service is delivered as a pull- or a push-service.
The images of our feed in the pull-service are available for download for 24 hours. Within this timeframe our pull-service clients can access and download the feed via FTP which is offered by our distribution partner Mainstream Data, a leading US-based communications company.
The images are not actively delivered to an FTP server within the client’s network.
