Great East Japan Earthquake - One Year On

Various Photographers

The magnitude 9.0 earthquake triggered giant tsunami waves that reached heights of 40.5 meters and triggered a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

The tsunami caused huge death and destruction on a level not seen in Japan since the two atomic bombings of World War Two. Official estimates put the death toll of the earthquake and tsunami at around 15,000.

In response to the ensuing humanitarian crisis the Japanese government mobilized the Self-Defence Forces, whilst a concerted international effort sought to provide help and aid. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced in the Tohoku region and in dire need of shelter, food, water and medicine.

The meltdowns at three reactors at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant and consequent radiation leaks into the air, soil and sea only compounded the crisis.

One year after the disaster, Japan is still coming to terms with its terrible social, economic and environmental impact.
