Oliver Weiken was born in 1983 in Germany. At the age of 16 he started as a freelance photographer for Bongarts Sportfotografie in Germany and was later hired as a staffer. He then worked for dpa Deutsche Presse-Agentur until he joined epa in 2005.
Oliver has been based in Paris, Berlin, and Bejing until he relocated to the Middle East region in early 2010 from where he is covering news events in Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Furthermore he has covered EU and G8 Summits, major international sporting events, and the earthquake in China.
In March 2015 Oliver Weiken was appointed Regional Chief Middle East. In this position he overviewed epa's coverage in the region from Beirut, Lebanon. At the end of the year 2016, he relocated to Berlin, Germany, to become part of the newly established team of epa photographers covering Germany.
Recently, he was awarded the special prize by the jury of the DAYS JAPAN International Photojournalism Awards 2015, award of excellence in the human conflict category of the POYi 2015, second place in the category editorial: war/conflict (professional) of the International Photography Awards 2014, first prize in the Story News category of the Istanbul Photo Awards 2014, and the John Faber Award 2015.
