The Fall of the Berlin Wall
After 28 years, the Berlin Wall came down on 09 November 1989. As Germany celebrates the 20th anniversary of this important event in history, we have created in collaboration with picture alliance the following three categories to illustrate the incidents of that time.
This selection contains impressions of the summer of 1961 when the German Democratic Republic closed the borders and started building the Berlin Wall.
This gallery features photos taken between 1961 and 1989 when Berlin was divided by a concrete wall of 43 km while the rest of Germany was separated into East and West by an Iron Curtain of some 1400 km length.
This gallery features images of the peaceful uprisings and impressions of the first encounters after 28 years of separation.
