Palestinians were protesting against Jewish settlements and settlers living in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The United Nations General Assembly on 29 November voted 138-9 with 41 countries abstaining to upgrade the Palestinian status at the world organization to a non-member state, tacitly acknowledging Palestine as a state. The more than two-thirds majority supporting the resolution was a triumph for the Palestinians and a diplomatic defeat for Israel, which failed to convince all but a handful of nations to join it in opposition.
