Sergei Ilnitsky has been a staff photographer for the european pressphoto agency (epa) in Moscow since 2003. He was born in 1974 in the small town of Mariupol, Ukraine. His passion for photography started as a child. He attended the Academy of Arts and Culture in Siberia while freelancing for newspapers and advertising agencies. Upon graduation, he worked at the regional newspaper Kuznetsky Kray. In 1995, he began as a stringer for epa assigned to the Siberian region of Russia.
Upon hearing the news, Sergei Ilnitsky commented: "To win is always nice. And to win in two categories is twice as nice. World Press Photo is the most important competition for any press photographer - not only to satisfy our ambitions but rather to draw attention to the problems that we address in our work: War, violence, injustice, cruelty, misunderstanding; we show all this.
The image from the Ukraine is very simple and complex at the same time. The character of a peaceful life is ruined. One minute a family sat at this table to take a meal. The next, a mine exploded and everything was broken, everything changed. I wish reality was such that there would be no occasion to ever have to take such a photo again.
In the ski jumping series, I tried to convey the feeling of an athlete in flight, enjoying the opportunity to control the speed. And playing with the longer exposure I was trying to capture a sense of the jumpers' inner world."
