Gwinnett County Foreclosures and Evictions

Photographer: Erik S. Lesser

Forecloseure is the legal proceeding by which a mortgagor's rights to a mortgaged property may be extinguished if the mortgagor fails to live up to the obligations agreed to in the mortgage. As the US economy moves toward recovery from the recession that began in 2008 and the number of jobs lost each month continues to decline, relief to homeowners delinquent in their mortgage payments has been slow in coming. By some accounts there were 1.2 million repossessions of property in 2010 with even greater numbers expected in 2011. Atlanta photographer Erik Lesser spent several days with Gwinnett County Sheriff Department deputies as they served eviction notices on foreclosed homes in the area north of Atlanta, Georgia, USA. What he found goes beyond the numbers and statistics found in government reports... How foreclosure affects those charges with enforcing and carrying out evictions and those who find their possessions placed on the streets like trash.
