Kimimasa Mayama was born in Otaru on Japan’s Northern island of Hokkaido in 1957.
After studying sociology at the University of Tokyo, he joined Jiji Press as staff photographer in 1981. Five years later he started his international career working for Reuters News Pictures. Kimimasa left the news agency in 2006 in order to start his own project of interviewing and photographing atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima. Until he joined epa in 2012 he was working as freelance photographer for the company as well as for AFP, AP, and Bloomberg.
Over the last 25 years Kimimasa has been shooting wildlife whenever he has been to Northern Japan.
