We at epa lost Sergei Chirikov, our valued and longstanding friend and colleague who joined epa many years ago in 1995.
After graduating as a journalist from Moscow State University he started his career in 1985 working for local newspapers in Moscow. He joined epa in 1995 as a freelance photographer, became a permanent photographer in 1999, and was appointed epa's regional chief photographer Russia and CIS territory in 2011.
Sergei covered breaking news, sports, arts, and culture in his region and the world while he always found time to capture outstanding features. He left behind unforgettable and amazing traces with his photography of the aftermath of the Soviet Union, of the two Chechen Wars, the Afghanistan conflict, the Beslan school hostage crisis, of numerous summits, elections, military parades, rocket launches, Olympic Games, and an uncountable number of major sports events.
epa is deeply saddened by his death, he will be greatly missed.
